Why Our Factory Uses GHH-RAND Airends: A Decision 17 Years in the Making

When we founded ZIQI Compressor in Shanghai in 2007, the question that defined our product strategy was simple: what separates a compressor that a factory will still be satisfied with in 2017 from one they will be replacing in 2012?

The answer comes down to one component more than any other: the airend. And the decision we made in ZIQI's early years — to use German GHH-RAND airends rather than building our own — is still the decision that defines our product today.

This is the story of why we made that choice, what it costs us, and why we have never reconsidered it.

The Problem We Were Trying to Solve in 2007

In 2007, China's compressor market was already large and crowded. Hundreds of manufacturers offered machines at prices that seemed impossible to match with high-quality components. The dominant logic was: use domestic airends, keep costs low, compete on price.

We watched what happened to the customers who bought those machines. Three years in, the machines were technically still running — but at 80% of their original output while consuming the same electricity. Five years in, recurring maintenance costs had quietly exceeded the initial purchase price difference. Seven years in, the machines needed major overhauls or replacement.

The buyers hadn't bought a bad compressor on day one. They had bought a compressor that looked identical to a good one on the spec sheet — and discovered the difference through years of electricity bills and service visits.

"The specification sheet never shows you what the machine costs in year five. We decided to build the machine that still looks like a good decision in year ten."

— ZIQI Engineering Team, Shanghai

Why We Don't Build Our Own Airend

This is the question we get asked most often by serious buyers. If Kaishan builds their own airend, why doesn't ZIQI?

The honest answer: because GHH-RAND builds airends better than we can, and our customers benefit more from us accepting that fact than from us pretending otherwise.

GHH-RAND has been engineering precision screw compressor airends in Germany since before most Chinese compressor manufacturers existed. Their rotor profile geometry, machining tolerances, and bearing specifications represent decades of iterative refinement. The difference between ±2 microns and ±15 microns in rotor clearance produces measurable efficiency and longevity differences over a 10-year service life.

China genuinely excels at precision sheet metal fabrication, high-volume assembly, and industrial cabinet manufacturing. Germany genuinely builds the world's most precise screw compressor airends. ZIQI's model is to combine these strengths — to buy the best airend available, and build a world-class machine around it using what Chinese manufacturing does best.

The result is a machine where the compression element is equivalent to what you find inside a Kaeser or CompAir — at significantly lower total cost than either of those brands.

How the GHH-RAND Decision Changed What We Could Promise Customers

Using a named, traceable international airend changed something fundamental about how ZIQI sells compressors. It meant we could make promises we could document — not just state.

① Verifiable before purchase

Every GHH-RAND airend has a serial number. We provide that serial number to buyers before the purchase order is signed — not after delivery. The buyer can contact GHH-RAND directly and confirm the airend is genuine and that ZIQI is an authorised OEM customer. No other claim we make is as powerful as one the buyer can independently verify.

② Predictable long-term performance

GHH-RAND airend performance data is published and independently verified. When we tell a buyer that a ZIQI unit will maintain 95%+ volumetric efficiency after 40,000 hours of operation, we are citing documented GHH-RAND specifications — not our own claims about our own product. That is a different kind of confidence.

③ Consistent quality across every unit

When you source from GHH-RAND, every airend arrives manufactured to the same specification. The consistency is built into the supply chain, not dependent on our own production quality control.

④ A standard competitors cannot fake

Any manufacturer can claim "German technology" or "GHH-RAND profile" airends. No manufacturer can fake a GHH-RAND serial number that cross-references successfully with GHH-RAND's OEM customer records. The serial number verification is the most reliable differentiator in a market full of specification opacity.

What This Decision Costs Us — and Why It's Worth It

A genuine GHH-RAND airend costs more than a domestic Chinese airend of comparable rated specifications. That cost is built into our pricing.

What we can tell you is what it costs the buyer when that differential disappears from the purchase price but reappears in operating costs over the next decade.

On a 75kW compressor running 6,000 hours/year, a 5% cumulative efficiency loss from a lower-tolerance domestic airend represents approximately $16,200 in additional electricity at $0.12/kWh over 10 years — on top of the IE3 vs IE4 motor difference. The airend specification difference alone exceeds the purchase price premium within the first 3–4 years of operation.

The buyers who understand total cost of ownership choose the GHH-RAND airend every time.

The Four Documents We Ship With Every Unit

The GHH-RAND airend decision was the foundation. Around it, we built the same documentation standard for every other key component — because a machine is only as trustworthy as its least verified component.

Today, every ZIQI screw compressor ships with four third-party verifiable certificates:

1. GHH-RAND airend origin certificate + serial number — confirming German manufacture and ZIQI's OEM supply relationship. Available before purchase on request.

2. WEG IE4 motor efficiency certificate — IEC 60034-30-1 Super Premium Efficiency classification from WEG, the same motor manufacturer that supplies Atlas Copco and Ingersoll Rand globally.

3. Motor copper winding test report — a separate third-party test confirming 100% pure copper winding material. This addresses the copper-clad aluminum substitution problem directly.

4. Siemens or Schneider Electric controller document — confirming open-architecture controller. Any qualified technician globally can service the machine without OEM software.

These are not documents we produce ourselves. They are certificates from GHH-RAND, WEG, Siemens, Schneider Electric — that confirm what is inside each machine. The buyer can verify them independently. That is the point.

What We Ask Every Buyer to Do

We have one request of every buyer evaluating ZIQI: compare our documentation against every other Chinese manufacturer you are considering — and let the documents make the decision for you.

Ask each manufacturer: What is the airend manufacturer's name and serial number? Can you provide a WEG motor certificate and a separate copper winding test report? What brand is the controller, and can a local technician service it without OEM software?

The answers — or the absence of answers — will tell you more than any product brochure ever could.

For ZIQI, all four documents are available within 24 hours of any serious enquiry, before any deposit or commitment is required.

17 Years Later

We founded ZIQI in 2007 with a simple conviction: the right customer relationship is built on documentation, not on brochures.

In 2026, our machines are running in over 130 countries. The GHH-RAND airend is in every screw compressor we build. The WEG IE4 motor, the 304 stainless steel piping, the Siemens or Schneider controller — these are not marketing claims. They are the standard we have held for nearly two decades.

The decision is 17 years old. The standard has not changed.
